Italy-ASEAN Partnership for Development: A look at Sustainable Development

Last September Italy became the new Development Partner for ASEAN, reaffirming the importance of Southeast Asia for Italian foreign policy and international engagement. Among fields of possible cooperation, sustainable development represents one of the most crucial area where Italy and ASEAN can foster their synergies, for enhancing the coordination of efforts and the potential of the two regions. Indeed, achieving a green and sustainable transition of societies represents a common goal for Italy and for ASEAN as well, which are both very much committed in positively contributing to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Climate change, green energy, development of circular economy, connectivity, smarter, greener and more sustainable cities are all common challenges for the future. These fields can offer Italy and ASEAN an important ground to relaunch their cooperation and explore it further. In order to share ideas and perspectives about the possible cooperation between Italy and ASEAN countries in the field of sustainable development, CeSI – Centro Studi Internazionali has promoted the publication of a series of articles written by Institutes from both regions on the following topics: digital economy, green energy, carbon neutrality and green recovery. The project was carried out by CeSI in collaboration with Center for Strategic and International Studies Indonesia (CSIS), Malaysia’s Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA), European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Italy and Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale (CeSPI).

The event intends to present to ASEAN Committee in Rome the results of the project, as occasion for discussing the partnership between ASEAN and Italy and the role of people-to-people relation for enhancing the reciprocal understanding further. By involving in the events representatives of think tanks from ASEAN countries, the event intends to collect new ideas for carrying on the collaboration and support the exchanges between the two regions.
